Reflections Garden
Shrewsbury Flower Show 2009
Reflections Garden was a contemplative show garden designed and built by Butler Landscapes. This design invited visitors into a meditative space that celebrated stillness, connection and the quiet power of nature through evocative planting, sculpture and water.
Centred around the theme of personal reflection and emotional resonance, this garden created a narrative experience. Two lifelike wire-mesh sculptures, seated in silent dialogue across the garden, represented introspection and human presence within nature. Between them lay a tranquil circular pond mirroring the emotional depth implied in the name Reflections.
The layout used soft curves, natural textures and layered planting to draw the eye gently around the space. Rustic elements such as a simple timber bench and a wattle-style fence provided grounding, while irregular sandstone and gravel pathways added charm and accessibility.
The planting combined cottage garden charm with naturalistic flow, blending soft pastels and strong verticals. Hydrangeas, agapanthus, echinacea, rudbeckia and verbena brought colour and textural diversity. Ornamental grasses and structural foliage gave movement and contrast, with thoughtful layering that balanced both visual and emotional tone.
A mixture of herbaceous perennials and grasses was selected not only for visual appeal but for their ability to create softness and flow around the static figures and hard landscaping. This careful planting allowed moments of surprise, serenity and seasonal celebration.
Reflections was designed not just as a visual statement, but as a garden that evoked feeling. It resonated with visitors who paused to reflect on the design, on the quiet presence of the figures and on their own thoughts. It showcased how landscape can serve as a medium for emotional connection and personal narrative.
