Sanctuary & Sensory Spaces – Hospitals & Care Homes

Sanctuary Garden Design

Sometimes, modern life can feel overwhelming. Sanctuary gardens offer a place of respite where you can get away from it all and take a moment to breathe. These spaces are specifically designed to promote peace and wellbeing, so every last detail must be carefully planned. Here at Butler Landscapes, our skilled team is here to thoughtfully bring your vision to life, executing every stage with care and precision.

Here at Butler Landscapes, our award-winning sanctuary garden design experts will work closely with you to ensure every last detail is as you imagined. Whether the garden is intended for a hospital, care home, hospice or simply a private home, we’ll consider who will be using the space and how it can be best tailored to their needs.

A sanctuary garden is an incredibly personal space, and we understand how important it is to get it right; that’s why we take an end-to-end approach, working closely with you throughout, from the initial design phase to carrying out the sanctuary garden landscaping.

Sensory Gardens

As the name suggests, sensory gardens are designed to stimulate the senses, providing an immersive and interactive environment that is particularly beneficial for those with additional needs.

For a sensory garden to be effective, it must be thoughtfully designed, incorporating various hard and soft landscaping elements to create a truly therapeutic space. From fragrant flowers and textured shrubs to colourful plant displays and trickling water fountains, we’ll consider how best to engage all of the senses.

With over 35 years of experience, we have a proven track record for sensory garden design. In one of our most notable projects, we managed the planting for Horatio’s Garden in Oswestry. This stellar work led to us being the main contractor in charge of building the Children’s Garden at Oswestry Hospital.

Butler Landscapes has extensive expertise in garden and landscape maintenance to keep your outdoor space in top condition.

Maintenance

So how do we work?

1

Consultation and survey

We’ll pay you a visit to discuss your requirements in person and get to know your space. By carrying out a site survey, we can take into account the garden’s size, gradient, soil conditions and more to ensure this is reflected in the design.

2

Concept designs and quote

We’ll produce a concept design, drawn to scale, detailing all the main features to give you an idea of what your new garden will look like. We’ll then provide a comprehensive quote to suit your budget.

3

Detailed design

Our experienced garden design team will create detailed plans, drawings, specifications and a proposed planting scheme. We’ll ensure every last detail has been carefully thought out.

4

Construction

We will then build our design – or that of other architects or designers – to transform your outdoor space. Our skilled landscaping team work carefully and precisely to bring the design to life.

5

Maintenance

Once all the work is complete, we can provide an ongoing maintenance service to keep your garden looking its best all year round.

Hillside Terrace

Hillside Terrace

We were asked to create a more social space and maximise light in this North-facing garden. We achieved this by extending the lower terrace area into the existing lawn, constructing a cascading water feature and installing a fire pit area with strategic lighting.

Terraced Contemporary Garden

The client wanted a family-friendly garden with plenty of space for socialising. We installed a fire pit, water feature wall and an outdoor kitchen area, constructed an upper and lower terrace and shaped a large open lawn, complete with planting.

Farmhouse Gardens

Our team was challenged to redesign this large domestic garden. We created a circular sunken garden, a parterre, a wildlife pond, a kitchen garden and a wildflower meadow, all connected by a series of pathways. The transformation was so impressive that it earned us a BALI Award.

The Well Garden, Wollerton Old Hall

In early 2024, Butler Landscapes were commissioned to construct the newly re-designed Well Garden at Wollerton Old Hall Garden, one of Britain’s most admired private gardens. The re-design was led by Lesley Jenkins in collaboration with Phil Smith (Pip Smith Designs). Their vision retained the garden’s iconic tall yew pyramids, linking visually to the Yew Walk, while introducing a fresh planting palette in shades of green, white, and blue. The re-designed Well Garden was officially opened on 19 April 2024, just before Easter, and was hailed by Financial Times garden writer Robin Lane Fox as a “masterpiece.”
