Gardening with the Bees

Shrewsbury Flower Show 2013

At the 2013 Shrewsbury Flower Show, Butler Landscapes proudly received the Large Gold Medal and the Wrekin Housing Trust Trophy for our sustainable show garden, ‘Gardening with the Bees’.

This garden was thoughtfully designed to promote biodiversity and support vital pollinators, with a special focus on bees. It combines ecological responsibility with creative, sustainable landscaping, using native planting, reclaimed materials, and a layout that serves both pollinators and people.

Recycled elements such as scaffolding boards and pallets form the framework of a practical and inviting retreat perfect for both gardening and relaxing beside a glowing fire pit. A scaffolding board walkway leads to a gravelled open space, with cube seating arranged around the fire pit. Surrounding this are carefully selected herbaceous and shrub plants offering year-round interest and crucial resources for bees.

At the heart of the planting, two beehives are nestled deep within the vegetation, providing a direct connection between the garden and its pollinating residents.

For the gardener, this space offers comfort and function: a sheltered seat against a pallet wall backdrop, dappled shade from a Prunus Serrula and practical featuresm like a compost bin and a garden fork always ready for use.

Gardening with the Bees’ is a celebration of working in harmony with nature where bees and gardeners thrive together in a shared environment of beauty, sustainability, and purpose.
