Country Retreat
Brief
Located in the beautiful Shropshire countryside, this large private garden wraps around a family home with open views towards the historic Lilleshall Monument. Although the setting was enviable, the existing garden layout was dominated by a poorly placed retaining wall close to the house, which disrupted flow and left the space underwhelming.
The clients approached Butler Landscapes to create a complete country garden design that would improve usability, provide privacy and transform the space into a garden for entertaining, relaxation and year-round enjoyment.
Design & Build
Our experienced team redesigned the space to unlock its potential and highlight the garden’s stunning surroundings.
- Retaining walls & circular entertaining terrace – A curved retaining wall in matching brickwork was built to create form and structure. This frames a large circular patio designed for entertaining, alfresco dining, and social gatherings.
- Water feature & soft landscaping – A cascading water wall was installed, providing a relaxing focal point. Surrounding planting beds with soft, naturalistic planting were introduced to blend hard landscaping into the wider landscape.
- Wildflower meadow & native tree planting – Drifts of wildflowers, combined with native tree planting, add biodiversity, seasonal colour and movement while improving privacy. This ensures the garden feels like a natural extension of the Shropshire countryside.
- Pathways & flow – New paved pathways connect the lower patio with the terrace, guiding visitors through the garden and framing key views, including the Lilleshall Monument.
Outcome
The finished design is a dynamic country garden that balances structure with natural beauty. In summer, drifts of wildflower meadow planting bring colour and movement, while in winter, evergreens and seedheads provide structure and texture. The circular terrace, softened with planting, offers a welcoming outdoor entertaining space, while the water feature introduces a calming atmosphere.
