Concept for Living Show Garden
Explore our projects for your outdoor transformation
This striking show garden was designed and built by Butler Landscapes for the Concept for Living Show in 2004. The concept embraced clean architectural lines, bold structure and a serene, Japanese-influenced planting palette, creating a calm and contemporary outdoor retreat.
The garden is framed by bespoke black trellis panels with red accent blocks, evoking Japanese shoji screens while adding height, rhythm and privacy to the space.
A raised timber platform serves as a tranquil seating area, finished with cube stools, bold red cushions and a matching low table—perfect for contemplation or casual dining.
At the heart of the design lies a minimalist, square water fountain. Set in smooth pebbles and surrounded by slate mulch, it delivers a soft, cascading sound that enhances the garden’s peaceful energy.
Slate chippings define the paths and create a modern, low-maintenance contrast with the lush planting. Timber steps transition smoothly between levels, tying the space together.
The planting scheme was carefully selected to reflect a Japanese aesthetic and thrive in acidic soil conditions. Bold, spring-flowering shrubs such as azaleas and rhododendrons provide structure and bursts of colour, while evergreen pinus pine trees contribute architectural form and year-round interest. Japanese maples Acer palmatum were chosen for their delicate foliage and seasonal drama. Grasses and other textural plants enhance movement and gently soften the hard landscaping. The underplanting includes a rich mix of acid-loving species such as heathers, pieris, hellebores, and ferns, offering an authentic, layered effect that brings harmony and depth to the design.
This garden fused Japanese principles of balance and simplicity with modern European styling. The result is a space that feels both meditative and stylish, ideal for a client looking to combine contemporary design with a love for plants and outdoor living.
