Prison Garden for Rehabilitation

In 2012, Butler Landscapes was honoured to collaborate with emerging designer Katharine Wills on A Prison Garden for Rehabilitation through Wellbeing at the RHS Tatton Park Flower Show. This show garden explored the transformative power of horticulture within correctional settings, emphasising how thoughtfully designed green spaces can aid rehabilitation and promote mental wellbeing.

The garden was designed as a calm, enclosed retreat offering structure, stillness and symbolism. A central Silver Birch tree, representing renewal and fresh beginnings, anchored the space both visually and spiritually. Around it, soothing planting in hues of green, soft purples and indigo blues created a therapeutic atmosphere known to reduce stress and aggression. Herbaceous borders, herbs and ornamental grasses were combined to stimulate the senses, promote mindfulness and reflect seasonal change.

We constructed the garden using precise, clean lines and high-quality, durable materials to reflect a sense of order and care. Seating areas were thoughtfully placed to encourage quiet reflection and conversation a key consideration in wellbeing-focused design.

The garden was awarded a prestigious Silver Gilt Medal, recognising the impact of the design and the quality of its execution.
