The Well Garden, Wollerton Old Hall

The Well Garden, Wollerton Old Hall

In early 2024, Butler Landscapes were commissioned to construct the newly redesigned Well Garden at Wollerton Old Hall Garden, one of Britain’s most admired private gardens.
The redesign was led by Lesley Jenkins in collaboration with Phil Smith (Pip Smith Designs). Their vision retained the garden’s iconic tall yew pyramids, linking visually to the Yew Walk, while introducing a fresh planting palette in shades of green, white and blue. The redesigned Well Garden was officially opened on the 19th of April 2024, just before Easter, and was hailed by Financial Times garden writer Robin Lane Fox as a “masterpiece.”

Our Role

Butler Landscapes were entrusted with the construction and hard landscaping works, ensuring that the design was realised to the highest standard. Our work included:

  • Groundworks and preparation of the site.
  • Installation of precise paving, walls, and structural detailing.
  • Careful coordination with the designers and planting team to meet the deadline for the official opening.

The Outcome

The result is a sophisticated, romantic garden that blends architectural strength with cool, elegant planting. For Butler Landscapes, it was a privilege to contribute to such a prestigious project, helping to deliver a garden that is already recognised as a new highlight within Wollerton Old Hall.
