Outdoor Worship and Storytelling Garden
In 2011, Butler Landscapes were commissioned to design and build a unique outdoor worship and storytelling area for the children of Whixall School. The aim was to create a calm, welcoming space where pupils could gather, reflect and share stories in the open air.
The Design
The garden was designed to be both spiritual and practical, with features that encouraged quiet reflection as well as group activities. Key elements included:
- A bespoke water feature set within natural timber and stone, bringing a sense of calm and focus.
- A cross motif in the paving, symbolising the worship element of the garden.
- Seating areas made from timber and tree stumps, providing a natural setting for storytelling circles.
- Raised planting beds and natural pathways, blending functionality with softness and seasonal change.
The Outcome
The completed space became a valued part of school life, giving pupils a place to connect with nature, learn together and reflect quietly when needed. The combination of natural textures, water and thoughtful layout created an environment that continues to inspire and support the school community.
