Pond Restoration

Brief

Butler Landscapes are not only experts in garden and landscape design. We also have the skills and experience to deliver complex restoration projects, including large-scale lake and water management works.

This project involved the full restoration of a failing lake system, where the existing sluice gate had completely failed and the watercourse was at risk. The works included:

  • Extensive dredging of the lake to remove built-up silt and restore depth.
  • Reinstatement of the sluice gate to restore correct water flow and control.
  • Stabilisation of the central island, preventing erosion and preserving the lake’s structure.
  • Careful bypass of the stream’s water flow while construction was underway, to protect the surrounding environment.

The Challenges

The conditions were extremely demanding. Deep mud created by the dredged material made access difficult, and restricted working space around the water added to the complexity. To overcome this, our team employed large tracked dumpers and excavators capable of working in saturated ground. We relied on experienced operators and specialist techniques to ensure safe, efficient progress, while on-site problem solving allowed us to adapt to the challenges of working in a live water environment.

The Outcome

Despite the difficulties, the project was successfully completed, returning the lake to a healthy and stable condition. The restored sluice gate and island ensure long-term water management, while the dredging has improved the ecology and usability of the site.
