Japanese Island Garden
Explore our projects for your outdoor transformation
This unique project was created on a private island, where specialist engineering and design came together to create a tranquil, Japanese-inspired retreat. To carry out the work, we first had to shutter the island and carefully manage the water levels to allow construction to begin.
Tea House
At the heart of the design sits a traditional-style tea house, built using natural timber and designed as a peaceful space for reflection and relaxation. Surrounded by informal gravel paths, stepping stones and seasonal planting, it creates a truly authentic atmosphere.
Boathouse
A timber boathouse was constructed at the water’s edge, blending practicality with craftsmanship. Designed in harmony with the island setting, it provides both storage and a striking architectural feature.
Bridges & Pathways
Access to the island is provided by handcrafted timber bridges, linking the tea house to the wider garden and creating a sense of arrival. Informal gravel paths wind their way around the island, leading visitors past rocks, grasses and herbaceous planting for seasonal interest.
Planting & Atmosphere
The planting scheme was designed to echo the principles of Japanese gardens – balance, calm and natural beauty. A mix of rocks, gravel, grasses and carefully selected shrubs bring texture and form, while existing trees were incorporated to anchor the design in its woodland setting.
The finished garden is a truly unique landscape – a Japanese-inspired island retreat complete with a tea house, boathouse and bridges. By blending engineering with artistry, we created a space that feels timeless, tranquil and deeply connected to its natural surroundings.
