Rooftop Garden, Birmingham
Butler Landscapes were commissioned by garden designer Liz Ackerley to construct a contemporary rooftop garden for her residential client in Birmingham. The project transformed a plain roof terrace into a sophisticated outdoor retreat, designed for relaxation and entertaining against the city skyline.
The Build
Working in a rooftop setting required care and precision. Every material had to be transported via the apartment lift and carried through the property, including multi-stem Silver Birch trees which were installed on the roof to create height and structure. Despite restricted access and logistical challenges, the Butler Landscapes team delivered the project efficiently and to a high standard.
Features
The finished garden blends clean, modern design with subtle planting. Key elements include:
- Composite decking with integrated lighting, creating defined zones and evening atmosphere.
- Europlanters in bespoke finishes, used for both planters and built-in seating.
- A striking contemporary orange dining table, made to measure, adding a bold splash of colour.
- Planting of ornamental Heucheras, grasses, Achilleas, and Nandina domestica for texture, movement and seasonal change.
- Carefully placed multi-stem Silver Birch trees, adding height and drama to the scheme.
- A reflective water feature and bold modern furniture to complete the contemporary style.
The Outcome
The result is a rooftop transformed — from an empty terrace into a sleek, contemporary garden with real personality. Minimalist planting and bold architectural features combine to create a space that is as functional as it is stylish.
